Did I turn off the space heater?

Updated November 3, 2026

On a cold morning, the little heater under your desk or in the bathroom is the best thing in the house. It's also the thing you're least likely to notice once it's been running for an hour. You stop hearing the fan, the room feels normal, and when you leave you're not thinking about it at all.

This is a doubt to take seriously. Space heaters cause a large share of home heating fires, which is why it makes sense both to check today and to build a habit that stops the question from coming up.

Why you can’t remember

Your senses adjust to constant input. After a while, you stop noticing the hum of the heater's fan and the warmth it gives off. The heater fades into the background, which means that when you leave the room, nothing reminds you it's there. If you turn it off, you do it without much thought, so the memory is thin.

Many heaters also look much the same on or off. Oil-filled radiators make no sound and have no glow. Fan heaters may have a small light that's easy to miss. And if you have more than one heater in the house, it's easy to remember switching one off and assume it was the other.

Then there's winter repetition. You switch it on and off every day for months. Those days blur together until you can't tell whether the click you remember was this morning's. Rechecking several times before you leave doesn't solve that; the extra checks tend to leave you less confident than before.

How to check right now

  • Ask someone at home to switch it off and unplug it

Have them check that nothing is near it, like curtains, bedding or clothes. Unplugging removes any doubt about the switch.

  • Check a smart plug, if it's on one

If the heater is plugged into a smart plug, the app shows whether it's drawing power and lets you switch it off. Most heater manuals say to plug straight into a wall outlet, so only rely on this if your heater and plug both allow it.

  • Think about which room it was in

Remembering the specific room and what you did there narrows the question. If you never went into the spare room today, its heater is probably off from last night.

  • Go back if no one can confirm

A heater left running unattended, especially near fabric, is a real fire risk. If you can't check another way, go back once.

Safety note. Never leave a space heater running unattended or while you sleep. Keep it at least 3 feet (1 meter) from anything that can burn, plug it directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip, and choose one with tip-over and overheat protection. If you can't confirm it's off and nobody can check, go back.

How to stop rechecking

  1. Turn it off when you leave the room

Make it a rule that the heater goes off whenever you walk out, even for a few minutes. Tying it to leaving the room makes it automatic in a useful way.

  2. Unplug it and say so

Switch off, pull the plug, and say "heater unplugged." An unplugged heater is easy to recall and impossible to misread.

  3. Choose a heater with safety cut-offs

Look for tip-over protection and overheat shut-off, and a certification mark from a recognized testing lab. Many newer heaters also have timers that turn them off after a set period.

  4. Add it to your leaving routine

Put "heater off" in the same spot in your exit sequence every time, for example right after lights and before the front door.

  5. Keep a timestamped check

One Loop's Appliance preset works for this. A quick photo of the unplugged heater gives you something to open later instead of trying to remember.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to leave a space heater on when you leave the house?

No. Fire safety organizations advise turning space heaters off whenever you leave the room or go to sleep.

Do space heaters turn off automatically?

Many have tip-over and overheat protection, and some have timers. They don't switch off just because you left, so turning it off yourself still matters.

Can I plug a space heater into a smart plug?

Most heater makers say no: plug it straight into a wall outlet, with no extension cord, power strip or adapter. A few heavy-duty smart plugs are rated for heaters, but follow your heater's manual first.

Why do I forget to turn off my space heater?

You get used to its sound and warmth, so it fades into the background. When you leave, nothing prompts you to think about it.
