# Did I unplug the iron?

> Most modern irons have an auto shut-off that turns them off after several minutes of not moving, but older and some cheaper or travel irons don't. Check whether yours has the feature, and if it doesn't and nobody can check, go back. Unplugging it and setting the plug somewhere visible is the easiest habit.

Ironing tends to happen in a rush, right before you need the shirt. You press the collar, pull the shirt on, button it while walking to the door, and the iron is the last thing on your mind. Until you're halfway to work.

A lot of irons sold in the last decade or so turn themselves off. Not all of them do, though, and you may not know which kind you own.

## Why you can't remember

Ironing ends with a switch of focus. The moment the last crease is out, your attention jumps to getting dressed and leaving. Setting the iron down and pulling the plug are done with your hands while your mind has moved on, and those actions leave very little memory behind.

The iron also looks the same whether it's on or off. Some have a small indicator light, but it's easy to miss in daylight. If you glance at it on your way out, there's no strong visual cue to remember. Then there's the cord. Was it in the socket, or lying next to it? From memory, those two pictures are almost impossible to tell apart.

Because you iron the same way each time, today's memory competes with every other ironing session. It's a common source-monitoring mix-up: you remember unplugging an iron, just not necessarily this morning's. Going back to check several times makes that confusion worse, since every extra check adds one more similar memory.

## How to check right now

- **Look up whether your iron has auto shut-off.** Search your iron's model name with "auto shut off." Many turn off after around 8 to 15 minutes upright, or 30 seconds face-down or on their side. If yours does, the risk drops a lot.
- **Ask someone at home.** Have them check whether the plug is in the socket and whether the soleplate is hot. If it is, they can unplug it and set it upright to cool.
- **Use a smart plug if the iron is on one.** If you ever plugged the iron into a smart plug, its app can show whether power is on and switch it off remotely.
- **Go back if it's an older iron.** If your iron has no auto shut-off, or you're not sure, and no one can check, return once. An iron left face-down on fabric is a genuine fire risk.

## How to stop rechecking

- **Unplug and drape the cord over the iron.** Make a visible signal: once the plug is out, wrap or drape the cord over the iron's handle. One look tells you it's unplugged, and the motion is easy to remember.
- **Say "iron unplugged".** Say it while you're holding the plug. The spoken words give the memory an extra anchor, separate from all the other times you've ironed.
- **Iron earlier.** Ironing the night before takes the rush out of it. Without a door to run for, you're far more likely to notice yourself unplugging it.
- **Buy an iron with auto shut-off.** If yours doesn't have it, an iron with the feature is inexpensive and removes most of the worry. Check the box for "auto shut-off" or "auto-off."
- **Snap the unplugged cord.** In One Loop, there's an Iron preset. Take a quick photo of the cord out of the wall and it's saved with a timestamp you can look at later.

## Safety note

Most modern irons switch off automatically, but older, travel and some budget models don't. Never leave a hot iron face-down on fabric or near anything flammable. If you can't confirm it's off or unplugged and nobody can check, go back.

## Set it up in One Loop

Loop name: Iron. Confirm with: Camera. Reminder: No reminder. The question is always whether the plug was out, and a photo of the unplugged cord answers it directly.

## Questions people ask

### Do irons turn off automatically?

Many do. Irons with auto shut-off usually turn off after several minutes upright, or much sooner if left face-down or on their side. Older and some travel irons don't have the feature.

### What happens if you leave an iron on?

An iron without auto shut-off keeps heating. Left face-down on fabric or near something flammable, it can scorch or start a fire.

### How do I know if my iron has auto shut-off?

Check the manual or search your model number. Some irons also have a light that blinks when auto-off has kicked in.

### Is it normal to worry about leaving the iron on?

Yes. Ironing often happens right before you leave, when your attention is already on getting out the door, so the memory of unplugging is weak.
