# Leaving for work checklist

> A good leaving-for-work checklist has three parts: what you need to bring (laptop, charger, badge, keys, lunch), what needs switching off at home (stove, coffee maker, iron, straightener), and what needs closing (windows, back door, front door). Pack the night before and the morning part takes two minutes.

Weekday mornings run on repetition. Same alarm, same coffee, same door. That sameness is useful, because you can get out quickly half asleep, but it also means you arrive at work with no clear memory of switching anything off.

Split the list into what you carry and what you leave behind safe. Do the bag part the evening before if you can. Then the morning is only about the house, and you can give those few checks your full attention.

## The night before

- [ ] Laptop charged and in your bag
- [ ] Laptop charger and phone cable packed
- [ ] Work badge or ID card in the bag or on your keys
- [ ] Clothes picked out for tomorrow
- [ ] Lunch made or planned
- [ ] Alarm set [worth a photo]

## Morning: switch off

- [ ] Coffee maker off (Machines with a warming plate are the usual culprit.) [worth a photo]
- [ ] Stove and oven off [worth a photo]
- [ ] Iron off and unplugged [worth a photo]
- [ ] Hair straightener or curling iron unplugged [worth a photo]
- [ ] Bathroom taps off [worth a photo]

## Morning: grab

- [ ] Keys
- [ ] Phone
- [ ] Wallet or transit card
- [ ] Bag with laptop
- [ ] Any medication you take at work
- [ ] Umbrella or jacket if the forecast needs it

## Out the door

- [ ] Windows closed [worth a photo]
- [ ] Back door locked [worth a photo]
- [ ] Pets fed and water bowl topped up
- [ ] Front door locked [worth a photo]
- [ ] Car locked once you're parked at work [worth a photo]

## Tips

- Put your bag in front of the door the night before. You can't leave without stepping over it.
- Hang your badge on your key ring so the two travel together.
- If you take the same route every day, the drive can wipe your memory of leaving. Check the house before you put your shoes on, not while you're rushing out.
- On days that go wrong, like a late alarm or a sick kid, slow down for the last thirty seconds. Rushed mornings are when the stove gets left on.

## Questions people ask

### What should I pack for work every day?

Keys, phone, wallet, work badge, laptop and charger, plus lunch and any daytime medication. Packing the night before keeps the morning to a few house checks.

### Why can't I remember if I turned off the coffee maker?

Because you did it while thinking about the day ahead. Automatic tasks get very little attention, so the memory is faint and easy to confuse with yesterday's.

### How do I stop worrying about the house at work?

Check each risky item once, slowly, and say it out loud. Some people also take a quick photo of the stove or the locked door so they can look once instead of driving home.

### Do I need to unplug my coffee maker every day?

Most newer drip machines shut off on their own after a set time. If yours has a warming plate and no auto-off, switch it off at the wall before you leave.
